Pesticides

The meal I ate last night was wild cod, sweet potatoes and kale.

Wild Cod - I was unable to find this on the What's on my Food Website.

Sweet Potatoes
Human Health Effects:
3 Known or Probable Carcinogens
6 Suspected Hormone Disruptors
7 Neurotoxins
2 Developmental or Reproductive Toxins

Environmental Effects:

7 Honeybee Toxins

Kale
Human Health Effects:
6 Known or Probable Carcinogens
22 Suspected Hormone Disruptors
10 Neurotoxins
10 Developmental or Reproductive Toxins

Environmental Effects:
17 Honeybee Toxins

Both the kale and the sweet potatoes were organic because I have been much more conscious about purchasing organic since the last module. However, until last week I had not been very good about purchasing organic so I would have been eating quite a bit of pesticides with my dinner! This is very concerning and unexpected. I try to eat foods that are good for my body but in fact I am likely eating a lot of pesticides along with them. We should be changing farming practices so that these harmful pesticides are never in contact with our food.

  1. hey Ayla! The recent modules really got me thinking too. A rule of thumb I have started to apply while grocery shopping (done today) is any produce that doesn't have a shell or hard surface to peel, I'm going to attempt to purchase organically. Today, I usually buy grapes for my husband , but I was extra aware of the difference in size and shape when it came to the organic grapes. It was about.. $1.50 more a pound...so I ended up buying both to see and taste the difference. I did for the entire year start to buy only wild caught fish, so I'm sure you're well aware of wild vs. farm fish too! it is a transition but your'e right ...cost does affect how often and habitual you want to eat...

  2. I agree with you Ayla that farming practices must be changed! It all comes back to the source. Another way to combat tis is to grow our own food. We need to teach more people these skills for environmental sustainability. I had no idea kale had so many potential pesticides. Farmers market here I come!
